Silere Medical Technology, Inc., www.silere.com, a company that I co – founded, has a purpose of designing, manufacturing, and marketing electrical neurostimulation medical devices targeting disorders of the auditory, vestibular, and perceptual systems. Our platform technology is focused on the peripheral nervous system, and is the only head mounted neurostimulation technology with the potential of addressing many diverse medical indications.

Silere Medical requires Series A venture capital funding to develop its devices, and bring them to clinical trial.  Pitching to venture capital companies is a daunting process for some entrepreneurs. In a ‘normal’ world, it is difficult and the probability of getting funded in the first round is very low. There is risk in starting a new venture, and in this economy, that risk is magnified many times over. Every pitch needs to be perfect, presented clearly and crisply, and with respect for the time allocated.  Creating the right pitch is a collaborative effort, and should result in a balance of management skill sets, technology offered, markets addressed, business model, financial plans, and other important elements.

Along with my partners Van Harrison and Jay T. Rubinstein, MD, PhD, I have pitched numerous top tier life sciences venture capital companies, and have received great feedback during the process. As a result of our presentations, changes have been made to improve our presentation. After each change is made, we test it for effectiveness to make sure it accurately reflects our current strategies and thoughts.

Although much advice is available online from entrepreneurs on how to create a pitch deck, the various topics to include and on which to place emphasis, how to answer questions that come up, and what to expect afterward, there are not many good examples from the venture companies indicating what they would like to see from the entrepreneur.

Canaan Partners, www.canaan.com, has created an effective workbook, offering suggestions to help the entrepreneur work through all the elements of preparation for that all important meeting. Silere Medical Technology had the opportunity to pitch Wende Hutton from Canaan, and we found her to be very insightful, prepared for our meeting, and professional with inputs, questions and responses.

For the entrepreneur wanting to be prepared for that important meeting, this Entrepreneurs Pitch Workbook from Canaan offers advice that is complete, and if followed correctly, will result in an efficient pitch deck that should accomplish the mission.
